N. Muralikrishnan was a child prodigy and has studied Carnatic music  from many renowned teachers in Chennai. His father Sri. R. Narayanan (a popular figure in the printing industry), and mother Dr. N. Shanthadevi, showered their love and affection and encouraged him in his journey to study music. He received advanced Veena training under the guidance of Dr. R.S.Jayalakshmi and has received music training under several prominent teachers of the University of Madras, such as Dr. Pramila Gurmurthy(Head of Music Department, University of Madras Music department), Dr. Suguna Varadhachari, Dr. Karaikudi Subramaniam, Sri Parur Venkatarama Iyer, Dr. Vedavalli and Dr. N. Ramanathan, who all have been responsible for his solid grounding in Carnatic music.
N. Muralikrishnan received his master’s degree in South Indian Music from the University of Madras. Being the music lover that he is, NMK did not stop there. He went on to study piano performance and “Western Music theory” at the Trinity College of Music, London and excelled in writing music using western staff notation. His thirst for knowledge did not diminish when he moved to the United States of America. Late Dr. Robert E. Brown, who is now attributed as the scholar who coined the term “world Music”, introduced him to “World Music”. He went on to study Ethnomusicology and obtained his second master’s degree in Ethnomusicology from San Diego State University focusing on music of Java and Bali. NMK has also done work towards a Ph.D degree in Ethnomusicology at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA).
